A rather slender, erect perennial with flowering stem 15-30 cm high, growing from a shortly creeping base.
Ecology UK: It is a very rare plant of wet gravelly places in Upper Teesdale and some of the Scottish mountains.

Fleurs : d'un brun très foncé, 3-5 mm, peu nombreuses, dans une inflorescence très pauvre. Anthères au plus aussi longs que leur filet ou un peu moins ; inflorescence [< 10] glomerules espacés. Tépales externes obtus/subobtus ; [brun sombres à noirâtres] ; parfois mucronulés

Flowers: about 3 mm diam. in few-flowered heads and forming an inflorescence of two whorls of ascending branches about 40 mm apart; perianth segments all obtuse and equal, the outer distinctly mucronate; filaments longer than the anthers.

Leaves: compartmented across blade 2-3 mm wide, linear, sub-terete, with obvious, horizontal joints; basal scales few, brown.

Fruit: Capsule 3-0 x 1-8-2-0 mm, [fruit not narrowed to a small beak, c.f. J. articulatus.] ovoid, mucronate or apiculate, nearly half as long again as appressed perianth-segments; seed 0.5 x 0.2 mm, obovoid or pyriform, with an acute base and a shortly crested apex.
